Experiments are much more expensive now, so funding becomes the main problem. This inevitably leads to an elite who hold the purse strings and the groupthink that surrounds them.

Those big names of the past did not need such expensive tools and so could do their own thing.

Its this rather than the attention economy that is the problem.
