If Ptolemy had ML couldn't he just have added more parameters to his model to get prediction accuracy good enough? Then maybe no one would have bothered with a new paradigm?

You may be right that use of ML to solve future problems will become the norm but you have to admire the human physicists run, and the parsimonious equations they generated?
