The west isn't finished yet.
The misplaced 'interventions' in other countries and the 2008 financial crisis were caused by the end of the cold war.
This freedom from existential threat gave power crazed and greedy people that feeling of freedom to do what they liked, and they did.
Now that we are at war again we may see some some improvements in governance.
Of course, needing to be at war for our system to work does not say good things about it, or human nature itself.
Liberal democracy and freedom, is this a peaceable culture or a warrior culture?
Maybe its a warrior culture, able to get the maximum creativity and commitment out of its people in order to prosecute war.
Maybe without war it just declines into authoritarianism?
