"We hold these truths to be self evident...."

Within the statement is the acknowledgement that this is an axiom, i.e. not subject to alteration by argument or observational data. The belief is fixed.

This is different from a position taken from assessing observation data. In this case the individual may be surprised by new data that does not fit the pattern and this may incur an update of the beliefs.
