Your characterisation of liberals is not right. They are suspicious of power and hence support democracy, rule of law, free press etc so as to diffuse the problem of power.

The left has never understood the problem of power, hence Stalin, Mao etc.

Once democracy has gone the choices are authoritarian rule or civil war.
